At Civil Society Coalition for Poverty Eradication, our mission is focused towards eradicating poverty in Nigeria, making life bearable for the less privileged. We are driven by the vision of a poverty-free Nigeria.
OVERALL MISSION & OBJECTIVES
Overall Objectives
With a mission to contribute to policies and programs geared to reducing and overtime eradicating poverty in Nigeria, the objectives of CISCOPE include:
- Strategic objective 1: To build strategic partnership and alliance with both the public and private sectors with a view to achieving welfare improvements for Nigerians.
- Strategic objective 2: To Develop the capacity of members and other Civil Society organizations to engage in policy processes and undertake evidence -based advocacy at national state and local levels.
- Strategic objective 3: To promote Civil Society participation in the Design, implementation and monitoring of public policies and programmes.
- Strategic objective 4: To empower local communities to engage their government for improved service delivery.
NEEDS
NEEDS is Nigeria's poverty reduction strategy blueprint. It defines Nigeria's Development challenges, the necessary economic and social reforms that must be made in order to attain the development goals prescribed by MDGs. NEEDS and MDGs are the two high level policy instruments of government and together with their state and local government counterparts (SEEDS and LEEDS) provide the framework for interventions aimed at welfare improvements.
The Achievements of CISCOPE in line with the objectives include:
(SO1) Built strategic partnership and alliance with both public and private sector with a view to achieving welfare improvements for Nigerians.
- Represented the Nigerian civil society in the drafting committee of NEEDS I and the just -concluded NEEDS II.
- Organized 2-day consultations in each of the six geopolitical zones aimed at collating the views of civil society on NEEDS. In addition, organized a national forum that harmonized the above views into "Civil Society Views on NEEDS".
- Carried out Civil Society summits on the SEEDS of Abia, Akwa Ibom and Bauchi states to interrogate their Gender responsiveness.
- On behalf of National Planning Commission (NPC) organized the focused Group Discussion aspect of the 2006 SEEDS bench-marking exercise.
(SO2) Developed the capacity of members and other Civil Society organizations to engage in policy process and to undertake evidence-base advocacy at national, state and local levels.
- CISCOPE organized trainings in Budget Monitoring and Advocacy as well as Public Finance Analysis for its members to enhance their participation in Governance in July 2004
- Training on Gender Mainstreaming in the SEEDs of Abia, Akwa Ibom and Bauchi states.
- Training of some Local Governments in the development of their LEEDS
- For the 2007 Election - Organized mandate protection activities, civic and voter education for 4,500 voters in nine (9) Local governments in the three states of Nasarawa, Imo and Ogun.
(SO3) Promoted Civil Society participation in the Design, implementation and Monitoring of public policies and programmes
- CISCOPE carried out a study to assess the performance of NAPEP in 2003.
- CISCOPE was well represented in, and chaired the committee that developed the Monitoring and Evaluation framework for the on-going monitoring and evaluation of the MDGs - Debt Relief Gains.
- CISCOPE has undertaken a study to determine the impact of liberalization, Deregulation and Privatization of education in Nigeria.
- CISCOPE conducted an evaluation of health and agricultural sector projects under NEEDS and the Medium Term Sector Strategy (MTSS) in Bauchi, Cross River and Enugu States in 2008 with the support of Canadian International Development Agency.
(SO4) Empowered local communities to engage their governments for improved service delivery
- Established Local Action Committees (LACs) to monitor the implementation of LEEDS in nine local Governments in the three state of bauchi, Abia and Akwa Ibom.
- Publication and Dissemination in SEEDSCOPE Newsletter of the critical roles of states and Local Governments in the attainment of the MDGs.
- Training of pilot Local Governments on how to develop their LEEDS.
