banner 1RAINY SEASON AGRICULTURAL INPUTS DISTRIBUTION TO CRISIS AFFECTED POPULATION IN NORTH EAST NIGERIA IMPLEMENTED BY CISCOPE IN JUNE 2017; AN INTERVENTION TO FORESTALL FOOD SHORTAGE.

The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) with the assistance of various international partners embarked on the Rainy season Agricultural inputs distribution to crisis affected population in the entire North East Nigeria, in conjunction with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture.

For proper distribution and effective management of the inputs, National NGOs were contacted to do the distribution, because National NGOs are more familiar with the terrain. Given its track record of effective implementation and heavy presence in the North East, CISCOPE was engaged to cover some parts of Adamawa and Yobe states,  Gerei and Fika LGAs respectively, were to be the primary focus. In both LGAs, 5000 households, translating to 45,000 people given 9 persons per HH, would be affected. The task to be undertaken by CISCOPE, include; identifying, targeting, validation and distribution of tokens to beneficiaries and then the distribution proper of the farm inputs. The basic condition for receiving these items, amongst others include, access to land and willingness to farm.

This intervention shouldn’t have come at a better time, given the numerous predictions by some relevant international statistical organisations, of impending famine and starvation looming to hit Nigeria in 2017, especially the North East. In line with the entire schedule, fertilizer, maize, cowpea, and different species of vegetable seeds were distributedtruck1

Going by the testimonies/reports of both evaluators and the agriculture extension officers of the state Government, the implementation was successful. CISCOPE team led by Mr Peter Egwudah, in line with this intervention, reached the most interior communities in Gerei. Gerei LGA from Yola, the state capital, is about 60km, but there are villages that surpass this distance from the Gerei local government secretariat. For example, a community like Barkopi is about 150km from the Local Government Secretariat, it takes about a 2 and half hour ride on a bike to get to the community, crossing streams and mini hills to reach, because the road isn’t motor able, this herculean task undertaken by CISCOPE, is necessitated to ensure that the distribution goes round the truck2LGA and that the inputs gets to the people that needs it the most. Still speaking on a location like bakopi, during the distribution of inputs proper, the indigenes of these interior villages were told to come out to a community that is a bit on the outside, but still the truck conveying these items could not even reach the “outside community” (designated distribution point) but was stuck at some point, due to the bad road, as seen in the picture below. Expectant communities had to be pleaded with; they heeded the plea and made themselves available to receive their inputs. This incidence only goes to show that EFFECTIVE IMPLEMENTATION isn’t a tea party.

There are some other locations that weren’t that tedious to reach too. Other places like Zumure, mallam madugu, Lainde, Nassarawo, Jifan, Jere Bonyo, Jere Bakari, Wuro dole, Wuro sani Damare among others, were also covered.  During the distribution proper, beneficiaries came out in their numbers to receive items as scheduled, all beneficiaries got fertilizer and maize, while the female farmers were preferred to be given vegetable seeds. Traditional rulers and community leaders were consulted and carried along so as to help sensitize their subjects on the program and also meetings were held with community members. The program was greatly received and appreciated by the people, both the Gerei and Fika in Yobe state as evidenced by the maximum cooperation enjoyed by the CISCOPE team. With this intervention one can only envisage improvement in the next harvest and also availabity of sufficient food in the North East in particular and Nigeria at large.
